In our exciting feature How I Became A Goalkeeper, KickOff catches up with former Golden Arrows goalkeeper Thulani Khuzwayo.
Khuzwayo started his football career at Orlando Pirates Development before he was promoted to the senior team.
I'm sure you have an interesting story to tell about how you became a goalkeeper.
"I had two uncles who played as goalkeepers. I looked up to them. I can say they influenced my decision to become a goalkeeper.
"They used to play for a team called KwaMakhutha Big Four. It is the same team I joined when I was 17 years old.
"Then there was an opportunity to attend trials at AmaZulu FC. There were about 400 trialists. They chose only four players, and I was one of them.
"My first game as a goalkeeper I was nervous, I was shaking, literally. But we won the game 4-0 and I made a lot of saves that day.
"I'm retired now, I played for Orlando Pirates, Golden Arrows, and Free State Stars.
"I left Pirates for Arrows when Ruud Krol took over. I played three seasons at Arrows before coach Ernst Middendorp fired us. Again like at Pirates, I left Arrows because of the change in coaches, Middendorp told us we were not in his plans."
Growing up, which goalkeepers did you follow?
"I used to follow Brian Baloyi, Emile Baron, and Moeneeb Josephs. Moeneeb I liked his bravery. I also liked the way he used to dress.
"Brian Baloyi I like the way he made those spectacular saves, and Baron I loved the way he filled the goalposts, he was not easy to beat."
Who are some of the goalkeepers who are your favorites today?
"Ronwen Williams is doing well, followed by the Richards Bay FC goalkeeper Samil Jamal Magoola, I'm also impressed with Veli Mothwa from AmaZulu, and Stanley Nwabili from Chippa United.
"All the goalkeepers I have mentioned have one thing in common, which is their bravery. That's the first thing you need as a goalkeeper."
