My Muti Story: When Arrows chairman asked for a refund

In this edition of My Muti Story, KickOff catches up with former Lamontville Golden Arrows player Bonang Ngaka.

The retired footballer tells a story of how the late Arrows chairman Rocky Madlala once asked players to go to the club's mute muti man and ask for a refund.

Who and where?

"Let me tell you the story of the mute Golden Arrows muti man who was wearing a long coat in one of our games. We were playing against Hellenic.

"The way that guy was so quiet it made things more scary. In our changing room, he started his thing and cooked some stuff, and instructed us to jump over whatever that was being burned or cooked that day.

"We were then told to grab some soil which was inside a tin by the door, and then head straight to the pitch, without saying a word you had to drop the soil on the pitch.

"When leaving the changeroom for the pitch, for this thing to work properly, the smoke had to pass through your legs."

What were you doing?

"We were told this was done by all the clubs, so for us to protect ourselves we had to do it as well. The muti man never said a word, Rocky was the one who was explaining all these things to us."

Who was the muti man?

"We didn't know him. It was the first time we saw him."

What did you have to do?

"There were no clear instructions except to drop the soil on the pitch."

Did everyone take part?

"Everybody did. It was just the white guys who used to wash off the muti in their hotel rooms immediately after taking a bath, but that could only done if a muti man bathed us on the eve of the game and in the hotel. You wouldn't dare if the muti sessions were done in a change room."

What stood out?

"That muti never works in football."

What was the result?

"Hellenic beat us 5-1. And on Monday Rocky Madlala asked us to go find the muti man and tell him he wanted his money back since his muti didn't work [laughs].

"He said to us, hey guys I want you to go to that old man and get my R10 000. We all refused [laughs]. Funny enough Rocky's other sister Pinkie was the one who ended up fetching the money from the muti man.

"She used to cook for us during camps. Up until today we still don't know what is it that we didn't do right that day for us to suffer such a heavy defeat."
