My Welcome To The League Moment: Bonang Ngaka

In our exciting feature My Welcome To The League Moment, KickOff catches up with former Lamontville Golden Arrows player Bonang Ngaka.

Ngaka says his biggest test in the Premier Soccer League came against Kaizer Chiefs at Kings Park Stadium in Durban.

"Our former chairman at Arrows Bra Rocky Madlala had this habit of coming to the change room, touching players' chests just to feel their heartbeat," Ngaka tells KickOff.

"If your heart beat too fast he'd tell the coach, Hayi khona coach this one is too nervous please replace him [laughs]. He loved making jokes.

"That day the guys were visiting the toilet non-stop because of nervousness, and Bra Rocky noticed that. The Kaizer Chiefs game made me nervous as well.

"That day I could feel we were now playing in a different level and a different world.

"That game took place at Kings Park Stadium before it was renovated. We beat Chiefs 3-1 that day.

"While we were still inside our change room, Chiefs players went to the pitch for their warm-up.

"But the thing is we were not aware Chiefs had left for their warm-up, we were made aware by the loud noise that erupted from the stands.

"The noise was deafening and the stadium was shaking and vibrating, remember the change rooms are below the stands so the vibration was too scary man.

"I thought to myself, today we will not come out of here alive (laughs), and remember we had not experienced anything like that before.

"On the pitch, I was up against the likes of Patrick Mabedi and Robson Muchichwa. The Zimbabwean Muchichwa was playing left-back and I was playing as a striker.

"That day it was war between me and Muchichwa. Remember even though he was a defender, that guy was  very skillful.

"What helped me that day was my stubbornness, I had to resort to kicking him, fouling him...even though I was a striker.

"That guy Muchichwa was not so fast, but still it was not easy to take the ball from him.

"The funny part is that every time I fouled him it was the Kaizer Chiefs bench who retaliated with anger and not him.

"Due to my small stature, the Chiefs bench thought I was a youngster. They kept on shouting, hey man Muchichwa kick this boy!

"And the referee kept on reprimanding me, hey play football man, and stop what you are doing!

"We beat them 3-1 and I scored the third goal. I scored against Brian Baloyi."
