Billiat’s options set to increase following Royal interest

Khama Billiat's options for a new club have grown across four continents as the reality of his departure from Kaizer Chiefs rolls out with ripple effects.

Billiat's five-year stint with Chiefs is now over with the club having recently confirmed his departure after failing to reach an agreement on a new deal.

The former Zimbabwe international can now move on to a new club as a free agent.

As is normally the case with a player of Billiat's profile his departure from Amakhosi has triggered a wave of opinions about what should happen next in his career which glittered at Mamelodi Sundowns earning him the value of being amongst the top earners in the league with his move to Chiefs.

On the other end, Billiat's situation of having no established football agent has also meant he has been flooded by agents offering to work out deals for him.

A Zimbabwean agent based in Europe has stepped up onto the scene in seeking to use his contacts to secure a deal.

Mention has been made about Turkey where there was previous interest.

The clubs in Turkey can easily meet Billiat's demands but there are concerns about the financial instability in that market with one of the clubs mentioned having had money problems in recent times.

These agents have also made suggestions of a possibility of China where there remains decent money.

There is standing interest from North Africa where two clubs have attempted to get close with making offers.

While one of the offers from the club is attractive, Billiat has chosen to keep calm instead of rushing to commit.

There have been enquiries from Algeria and Morocco but nothing more than that at this stage while for all the noise that has been made in Egypt about Zamalek that option is unlikely.

Pyramids remains the club that can easily meet Billiat's package besides Al Ahly who have not shown interest.

Through the Middle East there has also been contact from Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates with another club in Kuwait also keen to have a closer understanding of what it would take to entice the 32-year-old.

The interest from Saudi Arabia is in the second division where Pitso Mosimane was coaching last season.

Through all this interest Billiat has kept his calm.

None of the agents that have made frantic efforts have any written with the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Ajax Cape Town star man.

Billiat has chosen not to give away much about his preferences though he has engaged those that have been able to make contact.

Locally, Royal AM have shown an ambitious bid with club boss Shauwn Mkhize having made it no secret that she will be keen to break the bank for the 32-year-old.

With all the controversy at Royal AM due to the FIFA ban in the case involving Samir Nurkovic there will be reservations from Billiat about even considering that option.

Through the five years that Billiat spent at Naturena, Chiefs didn't win any silverware.

In his first year at Chiefs, Billiat went into double figures scoring 11 goals in all competitions starting off impressively under Giovanni Solinas before fading away after Ernst Middendorp took over midway across the season.

Amakhosi finished in position nine.

Then into his second season, Billiat's scoring numbers dropped with injury disturbing him along the way as Chiefs surrendered the title on the last day.

Billiat had injury issues again under Gavin Hunt and then came back to be influential with Stuart Baxter in charge but was underwhelming last season under Arthur Zwane with injury at fault yet again and was without at least one goal for the season for the first time playing in South Africa.

When the initial three-year deal which had an option of a further year went up, he was then offered a new two year in June 2021 which he signed.

That second contract expired on June 30.
