‘Cavin is clever enough to handle Chiefs’

Just hours after Cavin Johnson took over as stand-in boss from Molefi Ntseki, his appointment has been scrutinised in detail considering the circumstances that he is now plunging into at Kaizer Chiefs.

Johnson has taken over on an interim basis with confidence low after a single win from the last seven games which have being knocked out of the MTN8 and Carling Cup.

Molefi Ntseki did no better than Arthur Zwane in another experimental appointment which backfired.

"The moment he arrives at training the players' faces and attitude just change because of the way that he understands football," says Robert Ng'ambi.

The former Malawian international stands out as the man to have played the most football under Johnson while the two were at Platinum Stars where the veteran coach had two spells.

"If there are problems, he will attend to them and make the environment conducive for the players so that they can then enjoy the football.

"Players will understand him because he is also clever enough to handle it all.

"He is one coach that I know will make players enjoy playing football regardless of whether he is there short term or long term.

"The fact that he was at Ajax during their best year then Sundowns, Platinum Stars, and worked with Pitso in Egypt should tell you that there is something special about him.

"When I heard that Chiefs have hired him to head their youth structures, I knew that they are now taking the right path and on to something big.

"It is not easy that he is taking over now because the fact of the matter is that he is taking over during the season and big teams don't have patience and Chiefs is no different.

"Big teams always want to win because that is what matters to their fans.

"The plus is that while he has a challenge on his hands, he understands football and knows all the players.

"When you understand football, you will be aware that the changes will take time because of the way he wants the players to go about the business.

"He knows the players so his first call will be the mindset switch.

"Short-term it might not work out according to what supporters expect but with time there will be a lot of positive changes if he stays on that long.

"With us at Stars, he came into the first team the same way because he had been with the development prior.

"The team had been struggling under Owen da Gama when Cavin took over and his influence was immediate as we moved up the standings to finish 10th.

"Then the next season, we finished second behind Chiefs losing out on the league by one point so imagine what he can do with better resources at Chiefs.

"After that Platinum Stars was no longer the same as we went on to win trophies.

"He is a coach who knows football," says Ng'ambi who was recently working as physical trainer in the Malawi senior women's national team that won the Hollywood Bets COSAFA Cup and doubles up as assistant coach at Waka Waka Tigers in the Malawi Super League.
