The veteran coach took over in October after Molefi Ntseki's experimental appointment backfired.
Johnson had arrived two months earlier as head of academy but with thin options for the club he was then asked to take over walking into a fire that he couldn't extinguish.
At the end of his reign, Chiefs had won only six out of 22 matches and what made it worse was that Johnson won only two games from his last 16.
This has left Johnson less popular than ever and having to wait again for his next job now.
The start of the Betway Premiership season will open possibilities at clubs that will struggle to get going bringing Johnson amongst the huge list of names available on the market.
Prior to the Chiefs job he had spent two years on the sidelines after choosing not to continue as assistant coach to Pitso Mosimane at Al Ahly.
Before the Al Ahly job he had spent eight months without a coaching job after his short stay at Black Leopards where he didn't win a single match.

Johnson has also been with AmaZulu, SuperSport United and Platinum Stars as head coach.
While Johnson parted ways with Chiefs, the rest of the technical team that he worked with which had Dillon Sheppard as assistant coach, goalkeeper Aubrey Mathibe and Bhekumuzi Maluleke as fitness coach has been pushed away from the first team.
