Chiefs’ new keeper stands tall

Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari put in a solid showing after being handed his first cap since making the switch to Kaizer Chiefs.

Ntwari put in a full shift away in Libya in a game that ended 1-1.

The Group D opener of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers was played at the Tripoli International Stadium as Libya played their first match in the capital city venue since August 2013.

Libya had a familiar figure on the bench in Milutin 'Micho' Sredojevic as their head coach.

Though Ntwari was beaten from close range after Sobhi Al Dawi pierced through the visitors' defence to drill home the opener, his performance was solid as he made crucial saves, especially late in the game.

The towering keeper is yet to feature for Chiefs since signing for the Soweto giants in July on a four-year deal with an option of a further year.

His transfer was reported to have cost in the region of R6 million after Amakhosi decided not to renew Itumeleng Khune's contract.

Prior to Wednesday, his last slice of competitive football had been on another national team assignment on June 11 when Rwanda won 1-0 against Lesotho in a World Cup qualifier played at Moses Mabhida.

On the club front, Ntwari last played in the last league match of the 2023/24 campaign when he conceded with TS Galaxy suffering a 1-0 defeat to Polokwane City.

Standing at over 1,9 metres in height and blessed with both a pair of safe hands and immaculate distribution, the 24-year-old is expected to be the first-choice keeper at Chiefs this season.

German coach Torsten Spittler is expected to keep Ntwari in goals for the next qualifier against Nigeria on Tuesday.

After that, the Rwandan international will return to Naturena in the hope of making his debut against Marumo Gallants the next Saturday (September 14).

In the only season that he has played in the PSL for Galaxy, Ntwari played 24 games, conceded 23 goals and kept nine clean sheets.
