Chiefs’ most expensive transfer window?

Following all the transfer decisions that have contributed towards the club's longest trophy wait, Kaizer Chiefs have not shied away from dipping their hands into their pockets in this window.

Chiefs have gone nine years without lifting silverware and a myriad of reasons can be attributed but at the forefront has been both coaching appointments and player recruitment decisions made by the club.

The list of recruitments that shouldn't have been made – which includes Efmamjjasond Gonzalez, Bongani Ndulula, Michelle Katsvairo, David Zulu, Mario Booysen, Lazarous Kambole, Teddy Akumu and James Kotei – is bigger than those that turned into a success at the club.

The latest window, which closes in a fortnight, has had Amakhosi bring in a new coach in Nasreddine Nabi, plus seven new signings.

Bradley Cross and Njabulo Blom have come in this week after Inacio Miguel, Gaston Sirino, Bongani Sam, Rushwin Dortley and Fiacre Ntwari arrived earlier.

Chiefs have had to negotiate transfer fees for Cross, Miguel, Dortley, Ntwari and Sam, while Blom has returned on a loan deal.

Sirino was snapped up as a free agent after his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns.

Cross cost R3 million, while the price tags for Dortley, Ntwari and Miguel each cost at least double what Golden Arrows got for the 23-year-old, who has been to England and Germany.

The details of the finances that took Sam from Orlando Pirates to Chiefs are dark.

The estimate for the Naturena-based side's transfer bill in this window is now at R25 million.

In recent times, Chiefs have not spent as much in one transfer window as they have done now.

This kind of informed transfer activity can only be compared to what they did when Stuart Baxter arrived for his first stint in June 2012 when Morgan Gould, Siboniso Gaxa, Mulomowandau Mathoho, Siyabonga Nkosi, Tsepo Masilela, Kingston Nkhatha, Mathew Rusike, Kgotso Moleko and Brilliant Khuzwayo were all signed.

The hope at the Soweto giants is that all the new arrivals will be worth the money instead of becoming a waste.

Ntwari is expected to take over between the poles, Dortley should play at the back, just like Miguel, while Cross will come in at left-back.

Blom will also have a role in midfield, just like Sirino, with Sam still having to prove if he can deliver at a big club after failing at Pirates.
