Doc recalls Ace Ntsoelengoe derby wake-up call

Travelling back in time, Bafana Bafana and Kaizer Chiefs legend Doctor Khumalo has opened up about his first Soweto Derby experience.

Khumalo is regarded as among the finest footballers to grace South Africa football having won the league three times with Chiefs as well as being voted South African Footballer of the Year in 1992.

However, long before that, he was among the team's youngest debutants in the biggest fixture of all.

A lanky '16V' made his first appearance in the derby against bitter rivals Orlando Pirates in 1987, a match that would end 2-1 in favour of the men in Gold and Black at Ellis Park.

"I was 17 turning to 18. That was my first [Soweto] Derby at Ellis Park," Khumalo said on SABC Sport's SoccerZone.

"When it was time to enter the field, I looked over to the Pirates dressing room, I saw guys like Mandla "Metroblitz" Sithole, and thought: 'Oh, my God! Are these the players I'm supposed to play against? No I'm going home'.

"I told Bra Ace (Ntsoelengoe), I said: 'No, Bra Ace, I'm going home.'

He said: 'Hey wena saan! You're not going anywhere. You're going out on the field, you're not leaving!'

"I don't want to lie, when he was speaking to me, I agreed, but the reality was that when we were walking out of the tunnels, I saw the Pirates players.

"When you come out of Ellis Park, all you see is Black and White, and again I thought: 'Oh Nkosi yam, bengiyaphi (Lord, where was I going)?'

May Ace Ntsoelengoe's soul rest in peace," added Doc.
