‘He can definitely do a job for Chiefs’

The South American midfielder linked with a move to Kaizer Chiefs has been described as 'capable of carrying the midfield weight at Amakhosi'.

Venezuelan midfielder Edson Castillo has been linked with the prospect of a move to Chiefs with reports suggesting that he has already agreed to personal terms ahead of his move on July 1.

Chiefs have apparently been following the 29-year-old for several months and will make his move to Naturena on a free transfer after agreeing to a short-term deal with his current club Monagas SC.

Castillo has three goals in 13 appearances for Monagas playing from central midfield and has featured in the 2023 Copa Libertadores group stages.

Two years ago, Castillo was reportedly offered to Zamalek.

"I know Edson from my time playing in Venezuela (at Mineros de Guayana over a three-year spell)," says fellow Venezuelan Jose Ali Meza, who has just departed relegated Maritzburg United.

Castillo and Ali Meza were teammates at Mineros between 2010 and 2013 while the former was still a teenager.

While Ali Meza then moved to Deportivo Tachira before heading to Portugal and Bolivia, Castillo went to Azerbaijan and has also played in Mexico before returning home to play for Monagas SC in the Venzezuela Primera Division.

"I have absolutely no reason to doubt that he has the quality to play in the PSL and at a club like Kaizer Chiefs.

"Okay, I never played for Chiefs but was at Mamelodi Sundowns so I have an understanding of what teams at that level demand from players.

"What Chiefs will demand from Edson is something that I think he can deliver because he is a good midfielder.

"He has been to Europe where he played in Azerbaijan (at Neftchi Baku) so adapting to a completely new environment will not be a first for him.

"I don't know about his understanding of English, but I would like to think that since he has been to Europe, he has an idea.

"Edson has also been in the junior national teams and featured in the senior team for Venezuela in the Copa America and World Cup qualifiers.

"Based on that it should at least give you an idea about what level Edson is at considering that he has played international football.

"Someone who has been able to play in the national team always has an advantage.

"If he does come to play for Chiefs, then all answers will be provided then but I believe he can definitely do the job for Chiefs and carry the midfield weight," says Ali Meza.
