JUMP-START: Nabi’s Yanga effect at Chiefs

Nasreddine Nabi's start to his tenure as Kaizer Chiefs head coach is reflective of what he did as Young Africans ended their five-year wait for the league title.

Nabi has guided Chiefs to two wins in as many matches for a haul of six points on the board, which hasn't happened since Ernst Middendorp did it at the start of the 2019/20 season.

It might be still early in the season, but the sorrow that has been written on the faces of the Amakhosi masses is slowly fading away.

They will argue that a journey of a thousand miles starts with one step and the two steps that their team has taken are worth gold in the new Betway Premiership season, which has Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates and Chiefs at the top of the standings, in that order.

The boost for the Naturena-based side has come from Nabi, who did the same at Yanga for three years.

Nabi arrived at the club in April 2021 just a month after the end of his brief stint with Sudanese giants Al-Merreikh and had his brand-new season in charge at the start of the 2021/22 Ligi Kuu Bara (Tanzanian Premier League).

Week one of that season was an away trip to Kagera Sugar with Yanga, emerging 1-0 winners, which was followed by a similar score over Gelta Gold at home.

Nabi has done the same at Chiefs with wins over Marumo Gallants and AmaZulu FC.

Back at Yanga, another three wins meant 15 points from the opening five matches, laying a solid foundation to a title triumph won by a 13-point margin and undefeated all season.

The championship was finally wrestled from Simba after five years.

Though winning the title might not be what the Glamour Boys will want to publicly state, it is what they are expected to do regardless of what has happened in the last nine years.

While Nabi has won the league title before and knows how it is done, what is definite is that Chiefs will be an improved team this season from what happened under Cavin Johnson last term.
