How Pirates and Chiefs have fared behind Sundowns

Mamelodi Sundowns might have turned the domestic championship into personal property by lifting the title for six years in a row, but the question marks remain on how far behind their rivals Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs stand.

Sundowns have averaged 63,3 points in winning those six consecutive titles with the highest tally having been 70 (2022/23) while the lowest was 59 (2018/19 2019/20).

The order of stability for The Brazilians has been that three of the titles were won under Pitso Mosimane, two under Manqoba Mngqithi and Rulani Mokwena, and the latest with Mokwena at the helm.

PRETORIA, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 16: Mamelodi Sundowns

Orlando Pirates have been the second-best performing team through that period as proven by the points they have gathered and the positions they have finished in.

Pirates have been second thrice, third twice, and sixth once.

Milutin Sredojevic, Rulani Mokwena, Josef Zinnbauer, Mandla Ncikazi Fadlu Davids before Joser Riveiro took over for this season.

Kaizer Chiefs have been the third best-performing team in the last six years.

Chiefs were hopeful under Ernst Middendorp when they surrendered the title that was in their hands on the last day to finish as runners-up.

That second place has been their best finish in the six years that Sundowns have been champions in consecutive years.

At worst, they sank to ninth in the 2018/19 season overseen by Giovanni Solinas with Middendorp taking over halfway through the campaign.

Chiefs have had Steve Komphela, Patrick Mabedi (interim), Solinas, Middendorp, Gavin Hunt, Arthur Zwane Dillon Sheppard (interim), Stuart Baxter, and Zwane at the helm in the last six years.

JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 06: Kaizer Chie

SuperSport United have not been far off as well in the last six years.

Matsatsantsa have just had their best season of the last six following the return of Hunt to familiar territory.

They have only had Eric Tinkler, Kaitano Tembo, Andre Arendse (interim), and Hunt through the six years that Sundowns have been champions in consecutive years.
