'It's nothing new' - Chiefs' Ntseki hits back at criticism

Kaizer Chiefs' Molefi Ntseki has responded to the criticism surrounding his appointment after being promoted to head coach.

Following a poor campaign that saw Chiefs finish fifth in the DStv Premiership table, failing to qualify for continental football and the fruitless pursuit of a new coach, Ntseki was subsequently unveiled as a successor to now-assistant coach Arthur Zwane.

Ntseki's appointment has been met with criticism from sections of supporters, and club legends alike, with Lucas Radebe among those not fully convinced.

However, the former Bafana Bafana coach insists he is familiar with the scrutiny.

"I think it has happened to me ever since I started coaching 25 years ago," Ntseki said at the launch of the 2023/24 DStv Premiership season.

"As an amateur coach, having won the league (Ntseki successfully promoted Welkom Stars from the ABC Mostepe to the National First Division in 2000), people will always have an opinion in terms of how you do things, your approach.

"So, I think in the past 25 years I have gone through that, I was not surprised [by the criticism], but the most important thing is that I have a job to do and that job has to be done in the best of my ability.

"If my approach has worked for me in the past, having a player centered approach – that is what will work for the new position I'm in."

"The same thing happened with Bafana Bafana, that's why as I am saying it's nothing new. Maybe It's because I am South African because as South Africans we have got very little love for ourselves. Hopefully over time we will outgrow the negativity within us, about us, and become a very positive nation.

Chiefs kick-off their DStv Premiership campaign against Chippa United on Sunday, 6 August as Moses Mabhida Stadium. Before that, Amakhosi take on Township Rollers on Saturday, 29 July in a pre-season friendly.
