Johnson seeks intervention over Chiefs' misfiring strikers

Head coach Cavin Johnson has come to the defence of Kaizer Chiefs' misfiring attackers after a 1-0 win over Richards Bay.

Although Amakhosi made it three wins on the bounce thanks to a Nkosingiphile Ngcobo strike at FNB Stadium on Saturday, questions continue to be asked of the team's striking force, which once again failed to find the back of the net.

Chiefs strikers are yet to find scoring form this season, with the majority of the goals coming from winger Pule Mmodi and central midfielder Edson Castillo.

Christian Saile scored the match-winner against Moroka Swallows, however, Jasond Gonzalez is yet to score his first goal for Chiefs since his arrival while Ranga Chivaviro has scored just once since his profile arrival at the start of the season.

Speaking at the post-match press conference, Johnson explained why he believes the goals will start coming for Gonzalez once the Colombian scores his first.

"Ja, González, please God bless him so he can score goals," Johnson said to journalists after the game.

"It's all I ask because [Christian] Saile has broken an egg [broken his scoring duck], Ranga [Chivaviro] has broken an egg. Gonzalez hasn't broken the egg.

"A lot of times, strikers are like goalkeepers. They are crazy people and at training they score goals, they look good, then when they play against an opponent, which you can only simulate [in training], they tend not to find the net and that makes them frustrated.

"I hope he is able to get his head scoring, or feet scoring, or whatever he has to do, and maybe it will come better.

"But in all respect to him and Saile, the South African game is not easy to adapt to as a foreigner, especially when you speak French or Spanish. It's really difficult.

"That is one part that I find, we as coaches need to get more fluent in Spanish or French to make it a bit less difficult, because then for sure my player will get better quicker. So, I'm putting that as a little bit of an excuse.

"But they're both very good people and very good strikers."

Chief return to action with a DStv Premiership clash against Sekhukhune United on Saturday at the new Peter Mokaba Stadium. Kick-off is at 20:00.
