Johnson’s troubles worsen at limping Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs interim coach Cavin Johnson has sunk himself to the worst run of results of all coaches currently employed in the DStv Premiership.

Saturday's 2-1 defeat to Golden Arrows was the 14th match that Johnson has overseen without a win as head coach of a domestic club.

Johnson last won a game while at AmaZulu in April 2019 when Usuthu recorded a 2-0 victory over SuperSport United.

Since then, the 64-year-old has had a worrying run of results.

Five defeats and three draws in his last eight games led to Johnson being sacked at AmaZulu in September 2019.

From there, Johnson went on to Black Leopards in December 2019 but lasted just five matches.

None of those games were wins with his reign showing that he lost four and drew one before being fired.

Johnson lost to Cape Town City in his last game in the DStv Premiership prior to then arriving at Chiefs where circumstances have forced him to stand in as interim coach following the sacking of Molefi Ntseki.

The veteran coach's report card through his time working as a head coach at Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, AmaZulu, Leopards, and Chiefs now reads 240 games in charge, 93 defeats, 60 draws, and 87 wins.

Evident from Johnson's numbers is that he loses more games than he wins and is now faced with changing the fortunes of a club that has won four from 14 this season.

Besides his disastrous short stint with Leopards, Johnson has started all his new jobs at Platinum Stars, SuperSport United, and AmaZulu with wins.

At Chiefs, Johnson has taken over a team short on confidence and in need of a lift with goalkeeping in tatters, a defence not as tight as it was expected, midfield disjointed, while the strikers have been awful with new signings Ranga Chivaviro and Efmamjjasond Gonzalez both yet to score.

At other clubs who are in troubled waters, Vasili Manousakis – who has been serving as stand-in head coach at Cape Town Spurs – is without a win in 17 games, inclusive of the matches that he oversaw at Richards Bay.

Kaitano Tembo has won only four games from 23 through his time at Sekhukhune United and Richards Bay.

John Maduka has won only five games in his last 31 at Maritzburg United and Royal AM.

Of note at Chiefs is the fact that stretching back to last season when Arthur Zwane was still in charge, Chiefs have won only five games from the last 20.

Through that time, Chiefs have suffered 12 defeats which demonstrates how much of a decline they are in now.

Chiefs are currently in intensive care with a mere 11 points from their opening 10 league games trailing leaders Mamelodi Sundowns by 13 points with the champions having played two games less.

Next up for Chiefs is Cape Town Spurs on November 8.
