Kaizer Chiefs | 'Mendieta must go and get the best contract of his career at Chiefs'

Kaizer Chiefs have made it no secret that Stellenbosch midfielder Junior Mendieta is a prime target as they seek to find a replacement for Khama Billiat.

Mendieta has been a gem for Stellebosch with 18 goal contributions (nine goals and nine assists) in 30 appearances so far this season.

The Argentine – who plays similarly to Philippe Coutinho in his prime at Liverpool – has spent three years at Stellenbosch and has now ignited interest from Gauteng with Chiefs at the forefront though Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns have taken interest.

"This might be his chance to get the best contract of his career so I think he should go," says fellow Argentine Nick Gindre.

"Gindre played in the PSL for AmaZulu and Mpumalanga Black Aces after arriving from England where he featured in the lower division for several clubs amongst them Wimbledon.

"If he feels he is good enough and the money is equally good then he should just go, no second thoughts about it.

"He is turning 30 now and will get a big money three-year deal.

"If it was me, I would go.

"In South Africa, it is silly that once you are over 30 you will be reminded about that you are old.

"So, you must do what you can while you can.

"He can always go back to Stellenbosch later if he leaves in a good way, polite and professional doing so for the right reasons.

On the question of South Americans having no loyalty?"We all come from different family backgrounds, and it is normally a case of having to look after your family first.

"If you get the opportunity to look after your family, what are you going to do?

"You take the money.

"If you have family back home that depends on you then you take the best offer on the table because that then makes your job easier to look after your family.

"It is very easy for people who don't know to say things but once you understand the background then you realise that the player is right to chase the money.

"The football career will soon come to an end and the reality is that once you stop playing you are dead to them a lot of the times.

"You start being asked about why you didn't take the money.

"You ask yourself about why wasn't I loyal?

"Why did I not look after myself?

"After football you are on your own and life is not as easy as it as when you were playing.

"So, it is best you can and the most you can while you can," says Gindre.

Stellenbosch FC forward Junior Mendieta.

"As a football player you want to play for the big clubs and it is no secret that this is always every player's dream because you want to play in cup finals, lift trophies, and play in the Champions League.

"I think what is important for him is to think about what he wants in his career in the next three to five years and to do the best thing for him and his family.

"Do you want to play for a team that wings trophies and get your name up there while having a better CV?

"Do you want game time regardless of where it is?"Do you only want money?

"We are all different.

"It is very difficult to say no to a huge offer that doubles or triples your earnings as a footballer.

"When I was at Black Aces there was a bit of talk about me going to Mamelodi Sundowns…nothing came through out of it but I wish I had gone.

"It was Denis Onyango who then went instead from Black Aces.

"If the option to play for one of the biggest clubs in Africa, I don't think you will ever regret it," says Gindre.
