Masilela questions Nabi's tactics? 'It backfired'

With question marks on whether the problem at Kaizer Chiefs is the players or the coach, the side's former defender Tsepo Masilela has pointed a weakness that exposed head coach Nasreddine Nabi.

Chiefs' struggles for consistency continued after a 1-0 defeat to Cape Town City on Sunday.

Even though it's clear the side need some quality to lift the general performance, especially in front of goal, Nabi may also need to shoulder some blame, particularly with how Amakhosi have also been unable to keep a clean sheet.

For an organized team, the Soweto giants could have walked away with a goalless draw but showed lack of experience early in the second stanza after committing most of their defenders to a long throw-in.

As a result, they were caught on a counter-attack, as Darwin Gonzalez was played through on goal and fired a shot past goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma in a one-on-one.

"For Chiefs, you can't concede like that, throw in, next thing it's a counter-attack. Where was the rest defence?" quizzed Masilela, speaking on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"I'm not a fan of this long-throw-and-hoping-to-score football. Long throw and you send two centre-backs? You're gambling, you're just hoping and it backfired," the former left-back said.

Questions were also raised in a post-match press conference on why Chiefs, if they can't score, can't at least keep clean sheets?

Nabi's men have only kept a clean sheet once out of 11 matches.

"I don't think there is a need talking about the defence because the goal we conceded, it was our own throw-in, our defence has to go up," Nabi admitted to journalists at Cape Town Stadium.

"Probably we need to work better on our rest defence. After a throw-in, it's a counter-attack.

"In the first half, the opportunities that we got, had we managed to score one or two goals, we would not be talking about the defence right now," he reasoned.

Chiefs are back in Betway Premiership action on Wednesday when they host Stellenbosch FC.
