Huge interest in Chiefs’ first open test

The evidence of Kaizer Chiefs' popularity will be on show yet again this weekend when Amakhosi play their first match under Nasreddine Nabi.

Chiefs are back in the country after three weeks of pre-season training in Turkey.

Their first test will be the Toyota Cup on Sunday against Young Africans at the Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

This will be a game in which Nabi will showcase hints of what Amakhosi fans should expect this season under him.

The Tunisian-Belgian adopted a team left in crisis by Cavin Johnson and will push to make improvements with three additions already made in Bongani Sam, Rushwin Dortley and Fiacre Ntwari.

Ntwari and Dortley didn't travel to Turkey, so will be behind with regards to the work that the rest of the squad has done, while Sam got injured and was forced to travel back home earlier.

This means the composition of Sunday's team will be made up of players who were at the club last season, with either Brandon Petersen or Bruce Bvuma in goals.

The pair of Given Msimango and Thatayaone Ditlhokwe will lead at the back, with Yusuf Maart driving the midfield, while Ranga Chivaviro and Ashley Du Preez will carry the load up front.

On Friday, the club confirmed that 30 000 of the 42 000 tickets on sale have been sold.

This proves the huge interest in the club despite the nine-year drought that Nabi will be hoping to end.

Jessica Motaung, the marketing and commercial director at Chiefs, also spoke about the Toyota Cup and how they are already in talks with the club that they will meet next year.

Without any official games to play until September when the Betway Premiership starts, Chiefs are also due to travel to Botswana.

Amakhosi finished in the bottom half and will not play in the MTN8, which gets underway on August 3.
