REVEALED: What makes a Chiefs legend

A Kaizer Chiefs legend has weighed in on the debate about who should be categorized as the club's legend.

A KickOff article wherein former Chiefs midfielder Linda Buthelezi questioned the reference to some ex-players as legends, singling out Jabu Pule [now Mahlangu], has caused a stir on social media, with the football industry divided on the matter.

Mahlangu, who featured for the Amakhosi legends against Bloemfontein Celtic Legends in an entertaining Toyota Cup curtain raiser at Toyota Stadium last Sunday, has since come out to blast the man nicknamed 'Mercedes Benz'.

According to the Soweto giants' former winger, Abe "Chaklas" Shongwe, a legend should be someone who managed to do well and survived at least five years at a particular club.

"I still believe a legend should be someone who played for Kaizer Chiefs for years or, maximum, over five years," Shongwe says, speaking to this website.

"Then you can call that person a legend.

"Some people played only a year at Kaizer Chiefs. How can you call those people a legend? They are not legends.

"Even me, I have not started calling myself a legend yet, even though I am a legend. People like Jan 'Malombo' Lechaba, Teenage Dladla and Jackie Masike are legends of Kaizer Chiefs.

"I still believe a legend should be someone who played five years at Chiefs and made himself a name. That's a legend.

"The chairman [Kaizer Motaung] used to say, 'I can't give someone a jersey...' Do you remember those 50th anniversary celebrations, he was the one handing out the jerseys to the legends.

"He told us straight he knows exactly who are the club's legends, and I was one of those who got the jersey. Those jerseys were coming through the chairman.

"Many former players went home empty-handed, I got my jersey. I qualify to be a legend.

"Today, Malombo asked me the very same thing you are asking me."
