'This is the worst season since I’ve been at Chiefs’

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane claims the current campaign has been the most challenging since his arrival at Naturena.

Chiefs record a narrow 2-1 win over Stellenbosch at FNB Stadium on Saturday thanks to goals from Ashley Du Preez and Keagan Dolly, while Ibraheem Jabaar pulled one back for Stellies.

The win was a fifth consecutive win for Amakhosi and the first run of five successive victories for Arthur Zwane – a sign of stability for a side that has struggled with consistency this season, so much so that Zwane believes it has been the worst since his arrival at Naturena.

In December, Amakhosi saw injuries to both Ashely Du Preez and Caleb Bimenyimana, forcing Zwane to turn to his academy graduates Bandile Duba, before recruiting Christian Saile in January.

The Soweto club has endured a frustrating season riddled with injuries with the likes Reeve Frosler, Nkosingiphile Ngcobo, Khama Billiat all sidelined with long-term injuries while Dillan Solomons has recently returned to action.

"We had a very very difficult season. For me, I think this is the worst season ever since I've been at Kaizer Chiefs, even when I was an assistant and even before while I was with the development team," Zwane told journalists after the win against Stellies.

"I don't think any other coach has been in the situation that we are in at the moment, myself, Sheppy [Dillon Sheppard] and the technical team, we have had so many challenges.

"Having said that I think I must also still commend the players that came in, especially under pressure, when those that we were still trying to build a team, or have a core around know that is the identity.

"So it [injury crisis] made out lives very difficult when it comes to that."

Chiefs are now level on points with SuperSport United and Orlando Pirates who both sit above Zwane's charges. A second-place finish remains the target with six games to play.
