Caleb gets fresh start in Iran!

With former Kaizer Chiefs striker Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana having joined the ninth club of his professional football career, here's a closer look at his latest move to the Iranian top-flight.

The story

On 31 October, Bimenyimana signed for Iranian outfit Zob Ahan as a free agent.

The move came after he spent eight months without a club following his premature departure from Libyan team Al-Ahli Benghazi in February 2024.

Prior to his move to Libya, the Burundi international spent one season with Amakhosi but he was released by the club after some struggles adapting to life at Naturena.

In August this year, he was reported to be training with Ugandan side Kiyovu Sports in hopes of securing a move, according to The New Times.

He was also linked with a move to Stade Tunisien but nothing came of that as well.

However, the player now has earned himself an opportunity to revive his career at the Persian Gulf Pro League, where South African coach Pitso Mosimane also plies his trade.

Notably though, Bimenyimana and Mosimane narrowly missed a clash against each other, as their new teams Zob Ahan and Esteghlal FC met in a league game on 18 October, with the latter club suffering a 3-0 defeat at home.

Zob Ahan have already given Bimenyimana his debut, as the tall marksman had 14-minute cameo in a 1-0 loss at the hands of Chadormalu SC last Friday.

"Today's game didn't end the way we wanted, but I'm grateful to be back on the field after a year away due to injury," the talisman wrote on his Instagram after his debut game.

"Every moment counts, and I'm thankful to God for giving me the chance to play again. We will bounce back and come back stronger than before!"

The Burundian is only one of two foreign players in his new team alongside Georgian defender Grigol Chabradze.

Zob Ahan have won the Iranian league four times in their history, although their last crown came almost a decade ago in the 2015/16 campaign.

The club plays their home matches at the 15 000-capacity Foolad Shahr Stadium, which is also home to fellow top-flight team Sepahan FC, according to Transfermarkt.

Notably, Bimenyimana left South Africa holding a rather impressive record of being the first player to score a hat-trick of penalties in one match when Chiefs beat Stellenbosch FC 3-1 in October 2022.
