Mashego: Downs has breakfast for players, other clubs have to buy pies

Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Katlego Mashego has taken a sneaky jibe at some of his former clubs, remarking that, unlike at Downs, players from other teams have to buy pies for breakfast. Here's a look!

The story

Affectionately known as Mahoota, the retired striker was featured on the latest episode Sundowns' Pitchside podcast alongside hosts Tiyani Mabunda and DJ Naves. The trio discussed a range of topics involving the club, including the significant amount of games they have played so far.

During their discussion, DJ Naves remarked that the big teams play a lot more games due to their participation in various domestic international competitions and Mashego responded with a sneaky jibe aimed at some of his former teams in the PSL.

"Big teams play everyday," Mashego remarked. "That's why when you come here today, there's a nice breakfast in the kitchen. You know at these other club that I played for, you find 10 players with pie crumbs around their mouth in the morning. But that's a topic for another day.

He jokingly added: "Players stop by at Total or Engen garage to buy a steak kidney pie. Next thing you asked to press [Lucas] Ribeiro, how are you going to do that with a pie and coke in your system?"

The now 41-year-old played for Masandawana between 2013 and 2016, making more than 40 appearances, according to Transfermarkt.

It's unclear which of his former clubs he is referring to with the pie joke but the teams he represented during is accomplished career include Orlando Pirates, Moroka Swallows, SuperSport United, Lamontville Golden Arrows, and Chippa United.
