Why Magesi is avoiding Carling Knockout bonus talks

Premier Soccer League newbies are making efforts to avoid any disputes over bonus payments related to the Carling Knockout competition.

Magesi will face Mamelodi Sundowns in the final match in Bloemfontein.

In the past, smaller clubs have found themselves in conflict with their players regarding promised bonuses for winning cup competitions. For instance, in 2021, when they were known as Tshakuma Tsha Madzhivhandila FC, Marumo Gallants FC promised their players a share of the R7 million prize money after winning the Nedbank Cup in their first season in the top tier.

The agreement was for the players to split half of the prize money, with the rest shared among the team.

However, the situation turned sour when the club reportedly expelled star player Mokgakolodi Ngele after he brought up the bonus issue. Ultimately, Gallants could only distribute a total of R230,000, resulting in each player receiving only R10,000 for their Nedbank Cup victory.

Sources indicate that this history is why Magesi FC's management is being cautious about discussing bonuses.

"A source reported that the club management has not addressed the issue yet. Everyone is hoping they will discuss the final, although it might not focus solely on bonuses—there's a chance the topic could come up," the source told KickOff.

"It's not currently a priority for them. Players understand what is stipulated in their contracts; for instance, a player's contract may state that if they win, the club might grant them a bonus. That's why players at Magesi are not discussing the Carling Knockout bonuses; they recognise the terms in their contracts.

"This is standard practice for most Betway Premiership clubs, so it shouldn't pose a significant challenge for the Limpopo club. Magesi aims to avoid any discussions about bonuses leading up to the final, as it hasn't even been addressed so far."

KickOff attempted to reach the club's Chief Executive Officer, John Mathibe, but he did not respond to calls or texts.
