‘He was long dismissed by people who don’t understand him’

Four years ago, Christmas Day arrived in between a six-month period in which Edmore 'Spanner' Chirambadare couldn't even get a club in the Motsepe Championship.

He had spent two years at Kaizer Chiefs and then been to Maccabi FC and Royal Eagles in the two years afterwards.

So, after six months in the wilderness, he could only settle for Steenberg United for the last four months of the 2020/21 season and after their relegation had to pack again.

'Spanner' then made good of his time at Pretoria Callies by getting into double figures on the scoring charts, which ultimately led him to Venda Football Club and then Magesi FC, with whom he won promotion.

"I couldn't be happier now with what is happening in his career now because I have always been telling him that he is not a First Division player despite all the years that he spent in the First Division," Joel Masutha tells KickOff.com.

Masutha has worked with Chirambadare at four clubs in the First Division – Maccabi FC, Royal Eagles, Pretoria Callies, and Venda FC.

They could have also been together at Black Leopards, but the Zimbabwean couldn't agree a contract with the club.

Chirambadare is back as the focal point having punished Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns.

"I have always known and told him that he is a PSL player who just needed the opportunity and now that he has it, you can see how he is using it.

"At all those clubs, he was my key player, plus he never gave us any problems at all because he comes to training and does his work every day with the same effort.

"As a coach, you enjoy working with a player like him and I'm always reminding him why he came to South Africa.

"This is his second chance (in topflight football), and he is making use of it after he didn't play so many games at Chiefs.

"He was dismissed by people who don't know or don't understand him, but I always told him that he is not supposed to be in the First Division, it is just unfortunate that circumstances led him to the First Division.

"I always knew that he would go back to the PSL because he belongs there.

"The boy has a magical left foot and besides that, his reading of the game and the way he positions himself has intelligence written all over.

"Even under Steve (Komphela) at Chiefs, he was doing it very well and I don't know where he learnt it, maybe it was from coach Steve.

"When you are without the ball, he is a player that knows how to position himself for when the team gets the ball.

"Maybe I should give credit to coach Steve because I never watched his games before that at other clubs he played for.

"He is a guy who will run when it is necessary because his weapon is in creating huge opportunities out of nothing," says Masutha.
