‘Al Ahly fans angry over Sundowns success’

Mamelodi Sundowns' emergence in recent years as a force has shaken the continent with their success in the African Football still a discussion ahead of the start of the CAF Champions League.

With the CAF Champions League starting this week, Sundowns' success in the AFL is still being felt in North Africa where Pitso Mosimane has already worked in recent years after being poached from Chloorkop.

"Sundowns have become a problem for Al Ahly which is why the fans are so angry about the success of Sundowns," says Amr Hosni of Seven Eleven Agency – who are based in Cairo.

"Ahly are used to being trendsetters and if it wasn't Sundowns, they would have won the AFL, so this is what hurts them.

"Ahly have not beaten Sundowns in the last seven games so you can understand how much of a threat Sundowns has become to Ahly which is something that their fans hate.

"Sundowns has become the main team that gives Ahly this kind of discomfort that they don't like.

"I don't think the issue was money for Al Ahly but rather the fact that they couldn't win the trophy.

"Al Ahly fans believe they should always win every trophy.

"Al Ahly don't like a team that is a threat to them because they are used to everything going their way.

"The thing with Al Ahly is that they have all the money you can imagine for an African club and have the biggest fanbase.

"Here in Egypt, I think we now have a population of about 110 million population and half of them are Al Ahly fans, so you imagine how huge their support is with all with the media also supporting them.

"The media here also supports Al Ahly so you should understand.

"The thing about Al Ahly is that they don't look like they are in their best of form which showed when they played in the African Football League where they didn't even win one match out of the four that they played.

"They played two draws against Simba then drew and lost to Sundowns.

"Their true test will come in the Champions League knockout stages while the Club World Cup will be difficult with teams from Europe and South America.

"For Al Ahly they are always fortunate that when Zamalek is having problems like they are now it then makes it easy for them in the domestic league," says Hosni.

There is a possibility that Sundowns and Al Ahly could still meet again this season in the Champions League knockout stages.
