Bafana bells ringing for Downs midfielder

The recent performances of a Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder have not gone unnoticed by Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos, according to insiders.

The Brazilians continued their winning run towards an eighth consecutive Premiership title with a 4-1 win over TS Galaxy on Saturday at Lucas Moripe Masterpieces Stadium.

A brace from Iqraam Rayners and goals from Peter Shalulile and Jayden Adams were enough to seal a win that extended the Brazilians' lead at the top of the log table to 12 points after 18 matches.

For January signing Adams, the goal was a second in his sixth league appearance for the Brazilians since his move from Stellenbosch.

Prior to that move, Adams had been dropped from the national team by Broos, citing ill-discipline after failing to report for national duty. At club level, Adams had also fallen down the pecking order.

However, with a fresh start at Sundowns, the 23-year-old has hit the ground running and is seemingly poised for a return to the next Bafana camp this publication is given to understand.

In his previous interviews, Broos did hint that the door remained open for Adams.

"It's totally normal that he (Adams) makes mistakes. The only thing is I hope he learns about his mistakes, so I punish him. I see that after the camp he has a little bit of trouble playing for Stellenbosch. That has to have a reason. That means I think that the coach [Steve Barker] is not really happy with his attitude also.

"Again, if he learns about that, then there is no problem and I hope that he learns about it, and I hope he knows that having talent is not enough," says the 72-year-old in November last year.

"So, we have to help him because he is a young player. "So, because he is not there now, because he was not there in the last camp, I hope for him it's a wake-up call."

Bafana will take on Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in March and Adams is expected to be part of that squad.
