Cardoso’s appropriate incentive for Pirates contest

With the engraving of Mamelodi Sundowns' name on the new Betway Premiership trophy a matter of when instead of if, Miguel Cardoso will have extra to play for when the champions visit Orlando Pirates.

Sundowns have a date with Pirates at FNB Stadium on Sunday (15:30) in a match pitting first and second on the standings.

It is also a fixture threatening to bring Sundowns' confirmation as champions for the eighth consecutive year closer than the end of the season in May.

The Brazilians already have 58 points in the bag after two defeats and one draw so far this season, leaving them 18 ahead of Pirates.

While there is little to dispute that Sundowns will be champions again, Cardoso has a fun puzzle to complete on Sunday.

Of the 58 points collected by the side, the Portuguese mentor has a share of 37 under his guidance having taken over with the club on 21 after eight league games in December.

Cardoso has since been on the seat in 14 league matches, winning 12, drawing one, and suffering defeat in one.

Minus the 21 points won under Manqoba Mngqithi, Cardoso would be second in the standings with his tally of 37 and needing a win on Sunday to move top on a better goal difference.

Pirates have 40 points.

As crazy as it might sound, this is what the Betway Premiership has turned to for the Tshwane giants – a chase of fun facts and records.

"Football should be played with joy," noted Cardoso on Tuesday after the 2-0 win over AmaZulu FC.

Of interest is that Sundowns have already beaten all but one of their 15 opponents in the league with Chippa United the only survivors as they are yet to play the champions.

The Brazilians have played 20 games in all competitions in the three months that Cardoso has been at Chloorkop.
