'That's what needs to happen with Sundowns'

A former PSL coach has brought forward the view that while a strong Mamelodi Sundowns is good for the country, the Tshwane giants' dominance has the opposite effect on the domestic league.

Sundowns are currently on cruise mode en route to an eighth consecutive league title.

"I think the dominance will continue for a while due to the fact that Sundowns can go out and get any player that they want, and that makes them a very formidable force," notes Larsen, speaking exclusively to KickOff.com.

"But that must not be an excuse for the rest of the teams, it should drive the other teams to improve and close the gap on Sundowns.

"So, it's up to clubs, players, coaches to all work together to see how they can close that gap, and that's a beautiful challenge in sport.

"It was done with Manchester City in England. The likes of Liverpool and Arsenal closed that gap when everybody thought City was going to dominate for a long time.

"Real Madrid as well, other teams like Barcelona and Atletico [Madrid], they came back from the dead and rejuvenated themselves, and that's what needs to happen with Sundowns.

"You know it's scary when you look at the Sundowns players that are not in the match-day squad. All those players could walk into any PSL team," he continues.

Larsen, who ran out in midfield for Manning Rangers and Orlando Pirates during his playing days, understands the need for depth at Chloorkop.

"It's great for Sundowns and South African football, but for the PSL it's not.

"But, like I said, everyone else has got to work extra, extra hard on how can we be smarter, how can we recruit better, how can we improve to close that gap on Sundowns. It's a beautiful challenge for the rest of the clubs.

"Because not every game is against Sundowns, you know. There are still 15 other teams, and Sundowns has been beaten as well. It's just they have too much quality.

"When other teams are hit by injuries and suspensions, it affects them a lot more, while at Sundowns the players coming in are of the same calibre.

"That's the difference, and it is difficult to build such a squad because not everybody has the financial capacity to do so. It's just about working smart and working harder," says the soft-spoken tactician.
