Flemming Berg: The iron fist man at Sundowns

Flemming Berg has never been in the headlines since his arrival at Mamelodi Sundowns more than he has done in recent days.

Berg arrived at Sundowns in April 2022 to replace Jose Ramon Alexanko who was previously in the same position before leaving in November 2020.

The Dane has tightened his fist at Sundowns and was the subject of discussion early this week upon Rulani Mokwena's imminent departure.

Topical were matters related to player recruitment and how Mokwena fared in his first full season in charge after delivering the league and AFL but missing out on another three local trophies and the CAF Champions League.

Mokwena's contract had performance related clauses that prioritised winning the Champions League which then came with a handsome bonus.

Two cup final defeats plus a first-round exit in another competition on the local coupled with that semi-final defeat to Esperance in the Champions was a concern more than it was a celebration at Sundowns.

Player recruitment differences with Mokwena have also been mentioned as a factor that ultimately led to the coach's departure.

Berg was against Thembinkosi Lorch's signing from Orlando Pirates and felt either Tshegofatso Mabasa or Khanyisa needed to be brought in to strengthen the attack.

Mokwena had earlier been behind the signing of Lesiba Nku, Bathusi Aubaas, and Zuko Mdunyelwa while it has been reported that Berg influenced the arrival of Matias Esquivel and Tashreeq Matthews.

Six players – Junior Mendieta, Bongani Zungu, Thabiso Kutumela, Abubeker Nasir, Brian Onyango, Gaston Sirino – who all didn't have great returns last season have already.

There has also been contract renewals matters that have caused tension with that process no longer as smooth and easy as it was before.

Themba Zwane has not been offered a contract that he desired and only had the option activated on his deal.

Teboho Mokoena's representatives have also not had it the way they wanted in matters relating to his contract.

HAMMARSDALE, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 08: Grant Kekana o

Recent reports have suggested that Grant Kekana is unhappy with what he has been offered for a new contract leaving him on the fence.

One agent that spoke to this website noted how Berg is 'typically cold like most Scandinavians but professional in conducting his duties'.

"Maybe to someone else especially Africans his insistence on sticking to his way of being professional might not be likeable.

"I know when you are coming from a tradition of having things your way or things being done in a certain way then he (Berg) becomes a deterrent," says the agent.

Berg had been the Head of Elite Football Development at the Danish Football Association for seven years prior to joining Sundowns.
