Honour for Shalulile with eyes on the big prize?

When Mamelodi Sundowns return to action in the new season, Peter Shalulile's goals will ignite debate on whether he should be honoured.

Shalulile has set himself within a stone's throw of setting a new all-time scoring record playing for a top-league South African club through the PSL era years.

While club football is currently on a break, the Namibian has pushed himself up to 117 goals.

The 30-year-old now needs seven goals to surpass Siyabonga Nomvete's haul of 123.

Nomvete has enjoyed the comforts of that top seat for a decade since overtaking Daniel Mudau (110 goals in the PSL era years), who was ultimately matched by Mabhudi Khenyeza (110 goals).

With the start of the new season, Nomvete will have to surrender his place to Shalulile or Bradley Grobler (113 goals) depending on who touches the 124 goals ribbon first.

Should that 124 goals mark be reached, will there be need to honour either Shalulile or Grobler considering how huge a milestone this will have been?

Shalulile has been on double figures on the scoring charts for five seasons in a row, the kind of consistency that is rare in South African football.

The Sundowns gunslinger's numbers have read 22, 30, 23 and 15 while wearing Yellow and Blue and he had 19 in his last season at Highlands Park.

Shalulile's goals in the NFD playing for Highlands Park have not been factored in.

He has scored 90 goals in four seasons at Sundowns.
