How Ribeiro missed out on joining Mbappe, Ronaldo in elite list

Mamelodi Sundowns forward Lucas Ribeiro Costa missed out by a whisker on being included in the world Top Goalscorer rankings for the previous month.

Ribeiro has been in fine form for Sundowns, taking his tally to 12 goals in the league after his lone strike earned the Tshwane giants a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs at Lucas Moripe Stadium on Saturday.

The IFFHS released the top goal-scorer rankings for the month of February on Friday, with Al Ahli Saudi forward Ivan Toney topping the list with 13 goals, tied with Al Hilal striker Marcos Leonardo.

Ribeiro had a chance to feature in the rankings, which takes into account the top 100 leagues around the world.

South Africa are ranked 62nd by the IFFHS, with Egypt the highest-ranked country in Africa at number 20, as of January this year.

Compared to the world's best, Mohamed Salah of Liverpool made it at number 16 on the list with eight goals, while Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappe was at number 21 with seven goals, tied with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo of Al Nassr on seven goals, who featured at number 32.

By the time the rankings were released at the end of February, the Brazilian had scored six goals for the Chloorkop-based side for the period concerned and could not feature in the list of 38 (which cut off the list on seven goals), one goal shy of the following players:

Mbappe, Ronaldo, Alexander Isak (Newcastle United), Christ Wood (Nottingham Forest), Serhou Guirassy (Borussia Dortmund), Harry Kane (Bayern Munich), Emanuel Emegha (Strasbourg), Hulk (Atletico Mineiro), Émerson Galego (Ypiranga RS), Iago Teles (Londrina), Blaž Kramer (Konyaspor), Daizen Maeda (Celtic, Scotland), Louis Munteanu (Club Cluj) and three other players up to 38th on the list - all tied on seven goals.

Players outside the top 100 leagues by nations are also considered in the list but are not classified.

Lennart Thy was noted to have scored, for the month of February, 11 goals for Singaporean side Lion City Sailors, who are outside the top 100 leagues, with his name not classified but highlighted in grey.
