Dan Dance on Folz to Downs: I would have understood if...

Mamelodi Sundowns legend Dan Malesela has expressed confusion and disappointment over the club's decision to hire a foreigner as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Last week, the league champions produced one of the biggest shocks of the current transfer window, after it was revealed that former AmaZulu FC and Marumo Gallants coach Romain Folz will be serving as assistant to head coach Manqoba Mngqithi, with Steve Komphela occupying the senior coach role.

Something that has been met with different reactions from their followers.

Making an example, Malesela says Sundowns should have rewarded one of their former loyal players with the role.

"Of course Sundowns they might have their reasons, but for the empowerment of the local coaches it doesn't make sense," Malesela tells KickOff.

"I would have understood if he joined a foreign head coach who has coached with him before elsewhere.

"But to bring in somebody from outside for the assistant role, when your team is being coached by South African coaches, it's difficult to understand.

"For the sake of Sundowns cultural continuity, maybe they should have gotten somebody locally like their former players, for example, somebody like Surprise Moriri, that's an example. Then it would make sense.

"But surely they know better, they are not league champions by fluke, but the downfall of it is that we are not empowering our own.

"Otherwise they could have taken somebody from locally and allowed an opportunity to learn from the two experienced coaches Steve and Manqoba.

"Maybe it has to do with the papers [coaching qualifications], but sometimes we have to be practical as well. If I was the head coach I wouldn't have recommended a foreigner to be my assistant. A foreigner should come here to be a head coach not assistant.

"Even though Folz has coached here before, still there is nothing to talk about. I'm sure people had forgotten about him until Sundowns brought him back.

"Before that, I, don't think there is anyone who could have said, Sundowns need someone like Falz, based on what?"
