Mngqithi speaks: How I found out about my Downs exit

Former Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has opened up about how he found out about his exit.

Mngqithi was, somewhat surprisingly, let go by Sundowns, as confirmed by the club in a press conference on Tuesday.

This is despite the team sitting top of the pile when it comes to the Betway Premiership standings, with one defeat from eight matches so far.

The 53-year-old had taken over their reigns in July after the club parted ways with Rulani Mokwena - who soon after became head coach of Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca.

Speaking on MSW on his shock exit from Sundowns, Mngqithi detailed how he had found you that his time as head coach had come to an end.

"I would be lying if I said I knew [that I was leaving the club]; I just got a message from someone when I was going into a meeting yesterday [Tuesday] with the leadership of the club," Mngqithi said.

"Somebody hinted that there was going to be an announcement. Yesterday, fortunately, we were off, and we had to attend the meeting with the leadership. And that's when the whole story came out, but fortunately, someone sent me a message and asked if it was true, and then I started to know what this meeting would be about.

The straight talking tactician though added that he habours no sour feelings towards Sundowns, a club where he had spent the past 12 years.

"In my football career I've been in this merry-go-around of being a head coach, in and out, but I want to be grateful for what Sundowns has done for me over the years," Mngqithi added.

"I don't want to be that kind of a guy when the relationship comes to an end to be overly negative because I would not have been at Sundowns for all those years – I've been there for many years and I've enjoyed my time, I've won countless trophies, and I enjoyed every moment that had at the club with different coaches.

"Even in my time now, I had an exciting technical team and I think they did their best. I'm sitting here very proud."
