Ex-Downs striker: My pay cheque was gone in a week

In this edition of My First Pay Cheque, KickOff catches up with former Mamelodi Sundowns striker Russel Molefe.

Molefe reflects on his time as a professional footballer, stating that he never struggled financially as supporters always took care of him.

Who did you sign for when you received your first pay cheque in football?

"I began receiving payment while playing for a team called Health Centre in Bushbuckridge. I think it was around 1985 or 1986. I was paid in an envelope."

How much was it?

"My first pay cheque was R2,500. The great thing was that after each match, the club's supporters and people who appreciated my performance on the field would give me money as gifts. It would total around R4,000."

How did you celebrate your first pay cheque?

"Back in those days, you would typically take half of it home, so that's exactly what I did."

What did you buy for yourself?

"I bought a Mitre travel bag, which I still have today. It was made from strong material. Every time I look at it, I'm reminded of the people of Bushbuckridge."

Did your first pay cheque last you the whole month?

"It was gone within the first week, but I managed to get by because there's not much entertainment in Bushbuckridge, and I was staying in a hotel.

"We spent most of our time on the pitch rather than off it. Even when we had days off, we would still go to training because Bushbuckridge is so quiet."
