Scare for R60 million worth Downs striker?

Mamelodi Sundowns will play their 10th game this term having had little to no returns to date from their record Brazilian signing Arthur de Oliveira Sales.

As has become public knowledge, Sundowns spent approximately R60 million to bring Sales from Belgian Second Division club SK Lommel.

With this having been the most expensive transfer in the history of domestic football, the expectations have come higher than normal for the lanky forward.

However, Sales has played only thrice so far for the Tshwane giants.

His debut was from the bench in the MTN8 semi-final first leg against Stellenbosch FC when he was given just over half-an-hour.

Then with the side chasing goals, Sales played from start to finish in the second leg, but it made no difference as The Brazilians succumbed to another 1-0 defeat.

His third appearance didn't even last 30 minutes in the first leg of the second round CAF Champions League tie against Mbabane Swallows, being forced out due to injury.

Six weeks and five games later, the 22-year-old hasn't played again, leaving him on 151 minutes with no goal so far as a number nine.

For a R60 million striker, an avalanche of goals will be expected from Sales regardless of the fact that this is his first season at Chloorkop if he is to avoid having labels such as 'flop' next to his name come end of the season.

The longer he stays out, the bigger the question marks on his name.

Sales was signed to provide an alternative to Peter Shalulile up front with the Namibian having carried the scoring load since arriving from Highlands Park.

Issue of goals is not new for the Brazilian striker.

Besides playing in the top two-tier leagues in Brazil, where he only scored once, Sales ended his time in the Portuguese Primera Liga without goals from a dozen appearances.

His best returns came playing for Lommel in the Belgian Second Division last season with 10 goals to his name.

He also scored eight in his first spell in the Belgian promotional league, which usually features the reserve teams of the big teams in that country.
