BIG Ronwen claim: 'He's not tested enough'

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper and assistant coach for the Egypt national team, Roger De Sa, has stopped short of saying man of the moment Ronwen Williams is in a comfort zone at Mamelodi Sundowns.

Williams was honoured as both the Goalkeeper of the Year and Interclub Player of the Year at the 2024 CAF Awards held in Morocco on Monday evening.

When asked if these awards signify that the Sundowns glove man is now the best number one in Africa, De Sa responded it would be interesting to see how he competes at a higher level.

"To be honest, it was kind of expected. Given the run he had both at Sundowns and with Bafana, there aren't many teams that have had that kind of success at the national and club levels," details De Sa.

"Ronwen deserves this recognition, he has done fantastically well to put South Africa on the map. While I don't know much about the distinctions between the Interclub Player of the Year and Player of the Year categories, any award or nomination is fantastic.

"He has made significant strides, and it's great to see. For a player to win Player of the Year, both their club and country need to be successful. Unfortunately, that was lacking for him at both levels, or else he would have achieved more.

"Players like [André] Onana are with very good clubs, yet their teams haven't accomplished much, which has caused them to fade into the background," says the former Orlando Pirates coach.

Furthermore, De Sa is of the opinion it is crucial for players to play for successful clubs or national teams to give themselves a better chance of winning such individual accolades.

"I believe the Goalkeeper of the Year award places Ronwen among the top African goalkeepers, like Onana and others. However, he now needs to be tested. If you give him that title, he should be placed in a league where he can face challenges daily. Let's be honest, I don't think he's tested enough when he's winning the league by 20 points, as is the case with Sundowns.

"Playing in Europe would be fantastic and would allow him to emulate the likes of Lucas Radebe and Philemon Masinga, who played in the best leagues in the world. In essence, he has outgrown African football."
