Sundowns already 'smelling' another league title? Rulani responds

Head coach Rulani Mokwena insists it is too early to start thinking about the DStv Premiership title after Mamelodi Sundowns defeated AmaZulu to win their tenth consecutive league match.

The Brazilians broke yet another record becoming the first Premiership team to win their opening ten matches thanks to a Lucas Ribeiro spot-kick to see off AmaZulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Wednesday evening.

The win stretches Sundowns' gap at the top of the DStv Premiership to five points above second-placed Cape Town City, who have played three more matches than Sundowns.

However, speaking at the post-match press conference, Mokwena dismissed the suggestion that his side could already be thought of as the league champions.

"No, I can't smell it, no," Mokwena responded when asked if he could 'already smell' the title.

"No title can be won in December. Unless I've got problems with my sinuses."

Sundowns were made to sweat for their tenth consecutive win in a match marred by controversy as Usuthu saw their goal ruled offside.

"It was a difficult game even though I felt we had a lot of control in the first half, we still made a couple of mistakes," Mokwena added.

"But we rode the game and tried to control it a little bit more and then it became difficult because AmaZulu then tried to push for an equaliser.

"They played with a very aggressive press, with a very high line.

"We struggled a little bit for the legs because then you have to have transitions, you have space behind to try an capitalize on and then counter-press very aggressively which is some moments we did very well.

"We could have gone a bit more aggressively to get a second but we played with a lot more control and the mentality was very important.

"It's games like this, away from home against a very aggressive opposition and It's thee ted of games when you have to show your mentality and that's what the players did, so very proud of the effort."

Next for Sundowns is a CAF Champions League  group stage clash against Pyramids to be played on Sunday at Loftus Versfeld. Kick-off is at 15:30.
