Story Behind The Nickname: Harris "TV4" Choeu

In this edition of Story Behind The Nickname, KickOff pins down former Mamelodi Sundowns and Witbank Black Aces star Harris Choeu about his bizarre nickname, "TV4".

Choeu admits at first he didn't approve of the nickname, to the extent of even asking a club Public Relations Officer to plead with the fans to stop using the nickname.

Who and where did you play?

"I was at Witbank Black Aces when I got the nickname. At that time, television was still a new thing in the Black communities. Before that, it was dominated by programmes that only catered for white people on TV1 and TV2, etcetera."

What's your nickname?

"TV4."

Who gave it to you and why?

"The supporters. They were saying just like me, TV4 gave them entertainment. That's how I ended up with the name.

"When TV4 was launched, finally Black people could watch soapies and dramas that catered for the Black community. So, everyone was excited, and we could now watch enough football on our television screens.

"So, people were very happy and they loved that TV4 channel."

Did you like it?

"At first, no, but you know with nicknames, the more you don't approve of it, it's the more it sticks with you.

"Then M-Net came [laughs], they started calling me TV4/M-Net [laughs]. They just wouldn't let it go hey. This was during the '80s.

"Because those days, a PRO was chosen by supporters and not the club, I asked the Aces PRO to go and ask the Witbank Black Aces fans to stop calling me that.

"But to my surprise, the supporters told him in one of their meetings that they had no intentions of stopping calling me that [laughs]. I had to accept it."

Anyone that didn't use it?

"Before Aces, me and Harold "Jazzy Queen" Legodi used to play for a team in Limpopo called Seshego Saints. There, they used to call me "Brains". Others used to call me "Silly Boots" because of my dribbling skills."

If you could relive it, what would you want your nickname to be?

"Brains. I had that name since my high school days, I could understand it better. It had to do with my thinking when I was on the pitch."
