Mngqithi: I can substitute you immediately!

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has discouraged showboating or 'Kasi Flava' and admitted he would go as far as substituting a player indulging in such theatrics.

Showboating has traditionally divided the South African football community, with some arguing it's not beneficial for team purposes, while others believe it's an integral part of the local football tradition.

Bafana Bafana players are not exempted from this debate.

Both Patrick Maswanganyi and Relebohile Mofokeng took some minutes off the clock to entertain the sold-out crowd at the DHL Stadium during Bafana Bafana's 2025 AFCON qualifier against South Sudan on Tuesday.

Granted, South Africa was already 3-0 up at the time with the opponent well and truly beaten.

Even in such cases though, Mngqithi insists he would personally prefer for his players not to 'turn it on'.

"It requires a big paradigm shift because in our society, we have accepted that after we have taken the lead, probably it is an opportunity for showboating and doing all these tricks and it [has become] acceptable in society. Everybody thinks you have done enough when you have won the match and you have also had some nice tricks and made fools of opponents," says Mngqithi, adding he regard opponents as opponents and not enemies.

"I have always believed you want to beat opponents so next time they know who you are — not as an enemy but as an opponent.

"I don't want to make a laughing stock of you. You will see most of my players hardly do all these tricks after we have taken the lead because I can substitute you immediately.

"For me, what excites me is seeing the ball touching the back of the net — I like that and  I have always been like that. The reason why I became a football coach is because I wanted to influence a team to try to create a lot of goalscoring opportunities.

"I get excited when the game has a lot of goals," adds the outspoken coach.

Meanwhile, Sundowns are putting in the final preparations for the Carling Knockout final against Magesi FC at the Toyota Stadium in Free State on Saturday.

Kick-off is at 18:00.
