Downs to ‘tumble-dry’ the PSL

The significance of Mamelodi Sundowns' fixture against TS Galaxy will come with the treat of providing the champions with a chance of moving closer to another landmark achievement in domestic football.

Sundowns have already beaten 13 of their 15 league opponents with TS Galaxy and Chippa United the only survivors having not faced the champions yet.

Galaxy will hope to offer some form of resistance at Mbombela Stadium (19:30), otherwise they could be suffocated.

It has only been Polokwane City that The Brazilians have needed a second chance to get past having lost the first match in October, before then winning the second the following month.

So far, it has been 42 points collected out of a possible 45 for Sundowns, giving the possibility of a record points haul should they maintain that form.

The highest tally ever reached by a title-winning team in a 16-team PSL season was 73 points and this happened last season under Rulani Mokwena.

This means the champions only need 32 from the 45 points left to play for to set a new high on their way to their eighth consecutive league title.

Victory against Galaxy on Tuesday will come with matching the number of wins achieved by Kaizer Chiefs on their way to the 2012/13 title.

Fifteen wins remains the least any team has needed to lift the league title throughout the PSL era years.

The Tshwane giants are currently on a winning run which has stretched 10 games in the league and counts as the third-longest in the history.

They recorded 15 consecutive wins in the league from September 2022 to February 2023 and then went up to 11 from August-December 2023, just like they did back from January-April 2007.

Ten in a row this season has come since their only defeat so far this season against Polokwane City in October while Manqoba Mngqithi was still in charge.

Since then, they have not only won but also kept clean sheets against Cape Town City (3-0), Polokwane City (2-0), Sekhukhune United (3-0), Stellenbosch FC (1-0), AmaZulu FC (1-0), Richards Bay FC (2-0), Golden Arrows (4-0), and SuperSport United (3-0).

Only Magesi FC (2-1) and Orlando Pirates (4-1) have been able to score against them through that period.

The 10 wins in a row have come with 25 scored and only two conceded.

During that remarkable run, Miguel Cardoso has won seven in a row and hasn't dropped any points since he took over in December.
