Sundowns spate of red cards out of order?

Mamelodi Sundowns players' discipline has come into question with their recent spate of red cards.

Divine Lunga became the sixth Sundowns player to be red-carded this season alone after he was dismissed for wanting to get into a fist fight with Samuel Darpoh, in a 2-1 Betway Premiership win over Magesi FC on Wednesday.

The side's two goalkeepers have already been sent off this campaign, with Denis Onyango having an early shower in a narrow 1-0 extra-time win over Polokwane City in the MTN8 quarterfinals.

Ronwen Williams got his marching orders in a league game against AmaZulu FC that they eventually won 1-0 on Christmas Eve.

Other red cards have come in the CAF Champions League in the current season, where Aubrey Modiba was sent off in a 1-1 draw against FAR Rabat in Morocco in December.

Bathusi Aubaas and Khuliso Mudau were both dismissed in one game, in a 1-0 defeat to Raja Casablanca in the continent's premier club tournament.

The Tshwane giants, almost halfway through the season, have already matched the same number of red cards they got last term, where they were also on the wrong side of referees.

They also picked up six red cards in 2023/24, under previous coach Rulani Mokwena, who encouraged tactical fouls and physicality.

The most memorable and perhaps horrible one last season was when Bongani Zungu was sent off for a career-threatening tackle that broke the leg of Bernard Parker in a 2-2 draw against TS Galaxy in the Carling Knockout quarterfinals.

Downs eventually lost that match on penalties.

Other Sundowns red cards last season also emerged from the inaugural African Football League, where Mothobi Mvala and Junior Mendieta got marching orders against Petro de Luanda and Al Ahly respectively.

It was a surprise for Aubrey Modiba to finish the 2023/24 season without taking the so-called 'walk of shame', after he was sent off twice against different teams, in different competitions, among five red cards for the side two seasons ago.
