Kadodia confirms big news on Maritzburg

In an exclusive interview with KickOff, Maritzburg United chairman Farook Kadodia explained further why the club has decided to relocate to eThekwini.

The Motsepe Foundation Championship outfit has been unhappy with what they call a lack of support from the Msunduzi Municipality since they were relegated to the second tier.

Last season, the municipality stopped leasing the Harry Gwala Stadium to Maritzburg United and handed it to elite division club Royal AM instead.

"We have been forced out of Maritzburg, so we have to go somewhere else," a nonplussed Kadodia says, fielding an enquiry from KickOff.

"There are still other venues besides Harry Gwala, and the Msunduzi Municipality believes Royal AM is the right team to play there.

"Our offices have not yet been moved, but we are in the process of making our changes and finding new offices. There's a lot of work to be done now.

"We will officially confirm the new name of our club on Monday. One of the names to choose from is Durban City FC.

"But by tomorrow or Monday morning, we will know exactly our new name," he adds.

Kadodia says it upsets him to leave Pietermaritzburg, the only home he knows.

"I was born in Pietermaritzburg, I worked all along in Pietermaritzburg. I was a ratepayer for so many years in Pietermaritzburg.

"It's not only me but also my directors. We are all the same. But it's okay, we are going to have a new emblem now, and we will have to change things around. It's pretty painful, but we will have to do it.

"The municipalities are not forced to give their support to football, but if they build the facilities for people to play and for the youngsters to train, then it's fine. But they are not doing that.

"Last year, it cost us like R20 000 to R21 000 per game to host our matches. We will pay for it, but give us a venue in Maritzburg."
