PSL club chairman: My son is on Lamine Yamal level

Baroka FC chairman Khurishi Mphahlele hopes his son and teenage sensation Seboledi Mphahlele will elevate the Lebowakgomo-based club back to the Betway Premiership.

On Saturday, Bakgaga unveiled 11 new players at the Baroka FC Village, including 16-year-old attacking midfielder Mphahlele.

Banda Abdi Hassan, Mthokozisi Ndali, Collins Makgaka, Bonginkosi Makume, Willem Motupa, Siphelele Mthembu, Olaleng Shaku, David Matshipi, Surprise Nhlabathi and Tshepo Mohui complete the list of players the club has signed.

Mphahlele has made it clear the chequebook is not yet closed, as he is looking to add a few more players.

"The chequebook is not closed; we are still searching for any good player that might be available," he tells KickOff.

"We've signed these players looking at what decent quality they can bring to the team. Experience is something we were lacking in the previous season, in particular up front. So, we have identified our weak point and rectified it.

"Seboledi Mphahlele is my son and he was the best during the club's open trial, and when the coach says he wants the boy, I must give him what he wants and not stand in the boy's way.

"It's not me who wants him, but it's the coach who saw him during the trials. He was good amongst the trialists.

"I saw him during the trial, but I couldn't tell the coach to give him special attention. I wanted the technical team to make a fair assessment of him," adds the chairman.

Mphahlele went on to reveal the attributes that make him believe his son, who has signed a three-year deal, will go far in the game.

"He is an attacking midfielder, a good passer of the ball, he excels when it comes to spotting his teammates, he's got the skill, and he can dribble. That's what motivated us to sign him.

"We are not doing him a favour. We just want to do him nicely. If you saw what the Spanish boys were doing recently in the Olympics and the Euros, he is similar to Lamine Yamal. My son is on that level. He is a similar type of a player."

Concurring with the club chairman, head coach Morgan Mammila says he would have failed as a coach if the young Mphahlele did not go to Europe soon.

"It's the first time in my life seeing a son of a chairman playing quality football. He is there on merit; I'm not a coach who is looking to please a chairman when it comes to the quality of the players," he declares.

"I'm the one who told the chairman I want this boy signed, unaware that this boy didn't even have an Identity Document. It was on a Tuesday when I asked the boy to go to apply for an ID, and guess what, the following day, on Wednesday, the boy took the mom to Home Affairs and applied for an ID.

"When I'm training him, it's like I'm training a boy from a poor family. He wants to make a mark. It doesn't feel like I'm coaching the chairman's son.

"If this boy does not go to Europe, it means I don't know what I'm doing because this boy can play, he can pass, can read the game. He is a complete player.

"People will see him because I need to prepare him for Europe, and the only way to prepare him is to play him. My job is to promote this team, so I won't risk any player who is not going to help me when it comes to promotion.

"I will only play the players who are hoping to help the team get promoted, and the same applies to this boy. He is going to help us get what we want. He is a midfielder, he is a number eight."
