Where are they now - Mongezi Malashe

In our latest feature Where Are They Now, KickOff catches up with the highly rated Bush Bucks legend Mongezi Malashe on life after football.

Malashe won two major trophies with Bush Bucks in the nineties.

Who am I?

"Mongezi is from the villages in the Eastern Cape, all my career I played for only one team, that's Bush Bucks. I joined the club in 1991.

"I retired in 2002 because of injuries. My knees were hurting, age was no longer on my side. I was 35 years old.

"I won the Coca-Cola Cup twice, in 1993 and 1996."

My playing days

"Today I'm talking to you because of football, football did a lot for me I don't want to lie.

"It doesn't matter there was no money, money will never be enough, even current players are not paid enough."

Did I make money from soccer?

"I don't remember getting a signing-on fee. The biggest salary I've earned it's R8000."

Where I'm living

"I'm still at my parents' place, I'm staying at home. They've all passed on. I'm the only one left here, I'm staying with the children."

Jobs since playing the game?

"I coached in the Bush Bucks development in Mthatha. After that I struggled, it's tough when you are no longer earning a salary. I lost everything including a wife. Everything disappeared with my football career."

Current job?

"I'm working as a driver at a local hospital."

If you could do it again

"I'd change a lot of things. There are things that I used to do that I won't do again given a chance."
