After 15 months in charge, Baxter's reign with Matsatsantsa ended on a high as was able to successfully defend their Nedbank Cup crown on Saturday after dismantling Orlando Pirates 4-1 at Moses Mabhida Stadium in a repeat of last year’s final.
By doing so, SuperSport became the first team to retain the trophy in 35 years while they are now also the record title holders since the competition began flying under the Nedbank Cup banner in 2008.
For Baxter, the occasion made it six cup wins from eight final appearances as head coach, although one of his two final losses came last year against his successor at SuperSport, Eric Tinkler, who led Cape Town City to Telkom Knockout glory in December.
Baxter now bids farewell to United in order to take full-time charge of Bafana Bafana, and while he has brought plenty success to the Tshwane club, he said he will await club chairman Khulu Sibiya’s verdict.
"My father [Bill Baxter], God bless him, he was the coach of Aston Villa and I grew at Aston Villa watching him work," said Baxter.
"When I got into coaching, he was Scottish and he used to talk very, very harshly to me. Very often about 'I wasn't good enough and I shouldn't be easily satisfied, but keep working'.
"And he said to me: 'When you leave the football club, you just make sure that you asked the chairman ‘did I earn every penny that you paid me?' And if the answer is 'yes’, you've done okay.
"So I'd like to ask the [SuperSport United] chairman [Khulu Sibiya] 'did I earn the money that you paid me?' And if he said 'yes' then I'm happy, and that is how I'd like to be remembered."
Baxter’s recent contributions to the history books are not only limited to the Nedbank Cup, with the coach having led Bafana to their first-ever competitive win over Nigeria in their opening 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier earlier in June, a match which marked Baxter’s debut as national team coach.
