With the Nedbank Cup known to pit the ‘Davids’ with the ‘Goliaths’, the first round saw no less than five all-premier division clubs facing off.
The Citizens managed to overcome the test against Bidvest Wits, with a 1-0 victory at the Bidvest Stadium last week.
With just four opening round fixtures remaining this week, seven topflight, two first division and two second division teams have already advanced to the next round.
McCarthy has not forgotten about Orlando Pirates’ thumping at the hands of third division side Maluti FET College in 2013, and hopes to be pitted with a side of similar stature in this season’s Last 16.
“I don’t want PSL teams. The reason why I was excited to come to the league to come and coach here was because I wanted that ‘Ke Yona’ experience,” said the former Pirates striker.
“To go somewhere there – NFD or lower – and get that experience. I got Wits [in the first round] and I knew it was going to be a dog-fight.
“I wasn’t up for a fight but my players proved me wrong. We’re ready for any fight, but hopefully next round we can get – what’s that team that hammered Pirates a few years back? … A Maluti-type would maybe do me nice!”
