Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela reserves praise for under the weather goalkeeper Itumeleng Khune

Khune bagged the man of the match award as Chiefs thumped Golden Arrows 3-0 at the FNB Stadium on Sunday afternoon, to keep their hopes of silverware alive and kicking.

Komphela fielded a strong side, opting for Khune ahead of want-away reserve goalkeeper Brilliant Khuzwayo, despite the former picking up a stomach bug prior to the match.

The Bafana Bafana shot-stopper was called on to pull of a number of great saves to keep his side in control of proceedings, much to the delight of his coach, who was full of praise forhis skipper.

“If you have a top quality keeper at the back, you have confidence to defend. Football is not a game where you would be perfectly correct throughout 90 minutes but, when you commit that error, the one at the back helps you and keeps you in the game,” said Komphela.

“It’s tops to see Khune making those kinds of saves, and he does that consistently. Funny enough, in the dressing he said to me, ‘Mokoetlisi [coach], you know, I think I must always have this running tummy because every time I have it I get man of the match’.

“He reminded me even of matches with Bafana Bafana. He played today and had a bit of an upset stomach, so I said to him, ‘My man, I’m going to pray that you stay like that in matches so that you can pull man of the match’.

“It’s good that an athlete commits to the cause, plays very well, saves and makes their team win, when they are still not on top of their physical condition, and we wish him a speedy recovery.”
