Pirates closing in on Chiefs' Nedbank Cup legacy?

Kaizer Chiefs will be more invested in the Nedbank Cup final than normal, as rivals Orlando Pirates are threatening to dislodge their long-standing national cup legacy.

It has become fodder for banter and also embarrassment that Chiefs have not won any trophy in 10 years.

That is precisely because they have been prolific when it comes to winning trophies since their inception, particularly the Nedbank Cup, which has undergone various sponsorship transitions.

Even though the side have won the tournament only once, in 2013, since the green bank replaced the red one as sponsor in 2008, they have remained the most successful club overall in the national cup, with 13 titles, since their first crown in 1971.

However, the donkey's years of not winning trophies has seen old foes Pirates creep in behind them and starting to challenge their Nedbank Cup legacy they held on for so many years.

With Bucs adding back-to-back Nedbank Cup titles under Jose Riveiro, they have actually taken their overall tally to 10 since their first success in 1973 and are the second-most successful club in the competition.

They had been lagging behind when it comes to SA's version of the FA Cup, having not won it under the Absa banner. By the time they won it in 2011, it was their first title since winning the BOB Save Super Bowl in 1996.

Four Nedbank Cup titles in 13 years has seen Pirates moving just three titles away from equalling Chiefs' long-standing record of 13.

The third-most successful side in this tournament overall is Mamelodi Sundowns, who have won it six times, four of those under the banner of Nedbank.

SuperSport United have won it five times - three under the Nedbank, including back-to-back wins over the men in Black and White in the 2016 and 2017 finals.
