Is the league title slipping away from Pirates?

Being three games behind runaway log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns will test Orlando Pirates' depth and strength in their quest for the league title, according to a PSL legend.

A waterlogged Mpumalanga Stadium in KwaZulu-Natal caused the postponement of Pirates' away game to Golden Arrows, meaning they have now played three games fewer than the defending champions.

The points gap between the second-placed Soweto giants and Sundowns now stands at 12 after the the latter beat Marumo Gallants 3-1 on Wednesday.

"They shouldn't see this as a setback," declares Benson Mhlongo.

"Playing in the rain is risky and might lead to injuries to crucial players. They should use this break to regroup and aim to win those three outstanding games to ensure Sundowns don't run away with the league.

"Yes, it's challenging to have games in hand without points, but unfortunately, that's what it takes to be a champion.

"They have no choice but to win those games. Sundowns have done it before, so if Pirates want to challenge Sundowns, they must be stronger and more prepared. Complaining will only show they are not at the same level as Sundowns," he adds.

Mhlongo, who also featured for The Brazilians in his heyday, points out that for four seasons in a row, the men in Yellow and Blue also had to play catch-up due to their demanding schedule.

"When Pitso Mosimane and Rulani Mokwena complained, we criticized them. So now, this is a test for Pirates players to prove they can match whatever Sundowns can do. They need to show they can be better than Sundowns.

"Pirates have been performing well until they faced Sundowns, who are not as strong now. If teams don't challenge Sundowns now and allow them to gel and start a new generation, it's going to be a problem for many clubs in this league," he says.

Miguel Cardoso's men host TS Galaxy on Saturday, while Bucs welcome Cape Town City - with both having lost in the first round fixtures against these opponents.
