Club legend: Pirates won't miss Lorch

Orlando Pirates have enough depth in the squad to replace midfielder Thembinkosi Lorch who recently joined Mamelodi Sundowns, according to a club legend.

The talismanic midfielder completed a shock deadline day move to rivals Sundowns Friday evening, ending a nine-year stay at Pirates.

The 30-year-old had entered the final six months of his contract with the Soweto giants and is believed to have opted against renewing in favour of a change of scenery, forcing the Buccaneers' hierarchy to either sell on Deadline Day or lose him on free, come June.

Despite a public outcry from many supporters, club legend Shakes Gwabeni though believes Pirates have enough quality in the squad to continue without the Free State-born attacker.

"I mean he played his part and gave to the club while he was here," Gwabeni said.

"But to be honest, he didn't play a lot of games in the last few seasons and the team still managed to do well. So, I think that will continue, I think the team will do well. Pirates have the players in that position and have.

"I think too much noise has been made about it, he gave his best for the team when he could and supporters have to let him continue his journey."

While there is no denying Lorch's quality, Gwabeni's sentiments are also backed by the numbers, Lorch had made 10 appearances this season for the Buccaneers, contributing just one assist.

The midfielder was hampered by a niggling ankle injury in the 22/23 season that reduced his playing time to 16 appearances across all competitions last season.

In terms of options, Pirates have Monnapule Saleng, contributing 15 goals and 12 assists in the 22/23 season, securing the DStv Premiership Players' Player of the Year award.

New signing Patrick Maswanganyi has also proved reliable when called on, as has Karim Kimvuidi. The Buccaneers have also strengthened their attack with Lesedi Kapinga, Azola Matrose and more recently Thabiso Lebitso.

Lorch could meet his former side when Sundowns host Pirates at Loftus Stadium on 17 February.
